Our story

A family farm
in Prole, Iowa.

B & D Ag Enterprises has raised cattle in Warren County, Iowa for three generations. We're a family operation — when you buy a share from us, you're buying from the same people who fed the animal, named the pastures, and know the locker owner by first name.

Owner & operator

Dan Brownlee

Dan grew up helping his dad on the farm and has run his own operation since 1994: corn, soybeans, hay, and the cattle herd your share comes from.

In 2015 the farm received the Iowa Environmental Stewardship Award, presented by Governor Terry Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, for its conservation work: cover crops, manure management and pasture management. Dan has also served on boards and committees for 4-H, FFA and conservation.

Three generations

Raising beef is what we do.

Our family has been breeding, feeding, and raising beef in this part of Iowa for three generations. We've seen trends come and go — feedlot operations, "grass-fed" marketing, hormone debates, antibiotic rotation. Through all of it, our practice hasn't changed much: breed from our own genetics, raise them under roof, feed them right, and cut them the way the customer wants.

We have children interested in coming back to the farm in the next 5 to 10 years. The decisions we make now are shaped by the fact that this operation is meant to outlast us.

The practice

No hormones.
No antibiotics.
Under roof.

No growth hormones. Antibiotics are only used when a calf is sick — and when that happens, the animal is pulled from the beef program and sold through another channel. Our cattle are finished under roof in hoop buildings, which keeps them dry, comfortable, and low-stress. It also keeps our feed cost down, so we can keep your price down.

We control what's in the feed. That's the whole point.
